A landmark contribution to sustainable urban governance
The Virtual Institute for Sustainable Cities and Communities (VISCC) presented the book “Cities and Communities across Europe: Governance Design for a Sustainable Future” at the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union in Brussels. This landmark publication – the first jointly produced by the EC2U Alliance brings together contributions from researchers across all consortium universities. It provides a multidisciplinary and distinctly European perspective on urban sustainability as a response to the pressing challenges of climate change.
The event featured remarks by Clara San Damián, director of the Permanent Representation Office of Castilla y León to the EU, and was moderated by Raúl Sánchez Prieto, vice-rector for Internationalisation and Cooperation at the University of Salamanca. The panel also included Professor Juan José Rastrollo, coordinator of the publication, and Professor Agustín Ferraro.
The presentation also brought together representatives from various European organisations and institutions focused on sustainability and environmental policy, based in Brussels. Their participation added depth to the discussion on governance models and the critical role of institutions in advancing a sustainable urban future.
Advancing academic excellence and sustainable governance
During his speech, Professor Juan José Rastrollo emphasised the book’s mission to stimulate academic dialogue on governance and the future of sustainable European cities. “This work embodies EC2U’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and cross-border collaboration,” he remarked.
Published in both print and digital formats, the book is part of the VISCC initiative and features contributions from researchers at EC2U consortium universities, specialising in diverse branches of the social sciences. Interested in this book? Get your copy here!
