Computer Science High School “Grigore Moisil”

About our School

The Computer Science HighSchool “Grigore Moisil” in Iasi is the recipient of the School of the Year award, a School of the Future, it’s a Smart School in a city where the Education and the Creative Industries are powerful brands. The LIIS community is made of students, teachers, parents, graduates and everybody else who believes that the education can truly change our perspective on life and is a place where learning comes to life. In 2021, we celebrated 50 years of excellence in computer science education in Romania, under the motto “Excellence, Innovation, Connection”. The excellence has been confirmed every year, in all school subjects, and by the wonderful results attained at the county, national, and international competitions. Our students’ and teachers’ dedication in cultivating the passion for self-improvement has been a constant throughout generations. Giving to those around us and thus contributing to the sustainable development of the local community is a way of life here, at the Computer Science HighSchool in Iasi.

The Computer Science High School in Iasi has always been a top tier school, where the teachers have always been involved in supporting their students during their learning process. We are a Cisco Academy (since 2001), and ORACLE Academy (since 2006). We have been awarded the Excellence Certificate by the Ministry of Education (in 2002, 2007, 2018), the MaST Top School Certificate (2011), the Eco-School certificate (2014, 2016, 2018, 2020). We have been a member of the Democratic Schools network (since 2019), a pilot-school in the media literacy network (since 2021), a pilot school in the pedagogical practice consortium (since 2021), and a pilot school in the Pedagogical Practice database (since 2021).

Through the excellent results attained in the national and international computer science and robotics competitions, the constant implementation of new technologies in the educational process, and the development of open educational resources and softwares, the coordination of robotics workshops which inspire the students to be passionate about STEM subjects, the Computer Science HighSchool in Iasi, or LIIS as it is known among fans and friends, is indeed one of the educational brands of the city of Iasi.

In addition to the performance which they have proven since their founding 3 years ago, our school’s robotics teams have become a facilitator for the STEM education inside schools. The CyLiis robotics workshops are a complex learning experience, a world where the students’ ideas are transformed into robots. Currently, this open space, one of visible learning, is the headquarters of the CyLiis and Peppers clubs, where they can practice 3D modelling and printing, graphic design and it is a place where every day the passionate and creative students transform LIIS into a landmark of the performance and innovation in the STEM education in Romania.

Our HighSchool has built and is still building the future for its students and for the local community by getting involved in the digitalisation of the educational process. By implementing the E-Study electronic catalogue (which was free for students and parents in 2020), we emphasized the need to integrate the results of the evaluation process and all the information/resources which support the learning through electronic systems. The founding in 2021 of the work group called eLIIS Department, which had as an objective the creation and the development of the OER, as well as the organisation of dissemination events, have both consolidated the role of the Computer Science HighSchool in Iasi as an important cluster of digital resources and experience in eLearning within the educational community. Since 2000, we have created more than 40 educational softs, methodological guides and we have also ensured a constant transfer of innovative teaching experience. We have pioneered the digitalization of the educational process here, in Iasi, and we have continued the tradition of the competitions which promote the creation of the educational resources based on technology: the National Competition „History and Society in the virtual dimension” (debuted in 2003), the National Competition „Romanian Literature in the virtual dimension” (debuted in 2007), the Multi-County Competition „Infochim” (debuted in 2005), as well as the County Competition „Religious Education in the virtual dimension” (debuted in 2005).

In the 2020/2021 school year alone, over 180 newspaper articles have described in praising terms the impact of the activities and projects developed at the Computer Science HighSchool in Iasi. All the articles mention and praise the initiatives and the projects which have taken place last year, and which have been posted on our school’s website, at the section “LIIS in the press”: http://liis.ro/Pages/view/default/846 Our school’s presentation film can be seen by accessing the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6IeGgDEqCY

About our School

IASI, also referred to mostly historically as Jassy is the second largest city in north-eastern Romania and the seat of lasi County. Due to its strategic position lasi was for many centuries the crossing point of the most important commercial routes linking Poland, Hungary, Russia and Constantinople.

lt is located in the historical region of Moldavia and it has traditionally been one of  the  leading centres of Romanian social, cultural, academic and artistic lif e. This city was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia from 1564 to 1859, then of the United Princi palities from 1859 to 1862, and the capital of Romania for two years, from 1916 to 1918 .

Also known as the Cultural Capital of Romania, lasi is a genuine symbol of Romanian history and the main economic and business centre of Romania’s Moldavian region which in December 2018 was officially declared the Historical Capital of Romania.

lasi is one of the most important education and  research  centres  of  the  country,  accommodating over 60,000 students in five public universities,  being  the  home  city  of  the oldest Romanian university “AI.I.Cuza”, inaugurated on 7th November 1860 and the place in which the first Romanian newspaper has been published as well.

lasi boasts an impressive number of Orthodox churches, over  100,  many of  them located in its central area called Golden Plateau. The oldest, Saint Nicholas Princely Church, dates from the time of the region’s greatest rulers, prince Stephen the Great ( tefan cel More) who reigned from 1457 until 1504 . The most spectacular churches, however, are the 17th century Saint Parascheva Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedrala Mitropolitano Sfanta Parascheva) and the Three Holy Hiera rchs Church (Biserica Trei /erarhi), both very fine examples of Byzantine art. The intricately carved outer walls of Three Hierarchs Church make many visitors think of  a stone lace.

The Golden Plateau represents the nucleus of the  city,  around  which  the  entire  settlement  developed over the centuries. With the Palace of Culture (Palatul Culturii) at one end and the Union Square (Piata Unirii) at the other, the Golden Plateau features administrative buildings, historic churches, palaces and mansions. Many other important sites and  points of interest can be found in the immediate vicinity of the Golden Plateau.

The Sports High School exists since 1991 and it is situated in a splendid area of lasi, that is Copou, near the city stadium ‘Emil Alexandrescu’, being the only vocational sports high school in the county training performance sports talents with remarkable  national,  regional  and international results as part of the Romanian junior, youth and senior teams.

lts grades  range from the Vth  to  Xllth   specialized in athletics, handball and  Football  where the training is monitored by our skilled, professional coaches. Starting with the 1999-2000 school year, it has a fourth mixed-sports dass (boxing, basketball, judo, archery, rowing, tennis, fencing, etc) for the IXth to Xllth level. Our school welcomes all the students with sports skills from urban  and  rural  areas  and  from  other  nearby  cities, too. Our  instituation  fully assumes the fundamental role of training and promoting the young sports students capable of performance in athletics, football, handball, rowing, basketball, volleyball, judo, and archery.

The school promote s the European dimension of the teaching process by making use of varied strategies and active and pro-active ways of dealing with pupils while being open to  accept diversity in an intercultural and fair-play environment.
