Start of a Joint PhD between the University of Pavia (Cremona) and the University of Poitiers with support from the UFI*

Gregoire Bauguil, a musicology student at the University of Poitiers, has been selected by the UFI* to receive a scholarship to pursue a joint PhD between the University of Poitiers and the University of Pavia (Cremona) entitled  “Modal organization in French and Italian music between 1571 and 1652”.

Modality is the musical idom of the Renaissance, but at the beginning of the 17th century, the modal system is in crisis. This project aims to study how this transitional period was managed in France and in Italy, two closely linked countries, in order to analyze the interaction and differences between them in their use of a mutating musical system.

This thesis will be conducted under the supervision of Prof. Isabelle His, a member of the CRIHAM laboratory (Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire en histoire, histoire de l’art et musicology) at the University of Poitiers and Prof. Rodobaldo Tibaldi, a professor at the Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage of the University of Pavia (Cremona).
