PhD Network

Are you an early-career researcher? EC2U offers you opportunities to connect with peers and supervisors from across Europe.

The PhD Network connects supervisors and PhD students, building a multidisciplinary expert community on Quality Education. 

Activities include:

  • Adapted mobilities for PhD students
  • Thematic doctoral workshops:
    • Workshop on Educational sciences (languages, cultures and other fields) - November 2025, Johannes Kepler University of Linz
    • Workshop on Language and cultural diversity in European society - 2026, Friedrich Schiller University of Jena
  • Young Researchers Workshop:
    • A forum for doctoral candidates to present and discuss their research on language, education, and cultural diversity - April 2025, at the University of Turku

Joint Research Activities

Two innovative research projects explore how Higher Education Institutions teach foreign languages and cultures, and how they address cultural biases and stereotypes on multilingual, multicultural campuses.

This 2 innovative research projects explore:

  • Multilingualism, cultural diversity and education for sustainable development in Higher Education Institution
  • Cultural biases and stereotypes in online and offline communication for sustainable development in Higher Education Institution

The results have been/will be shared in 3 Research Conferences

  • Conference on Multilingualism, cultural diversity and education for sustainable development in HEI -September 2024, University of Poitiers
    Focus: representations of foreign languages (including lesser-used ones) and inclusive teaching methods, explored through surveys, language biographies, and semi-structured interviews.
     
  • Conference on Cultural biases and stereotypes in online and offline communication for sustainable development in HEI - 2026, University of Pavia
    Focus: different forms of cultural biases, particularly in social media and HEI-related print texts, studied with interdisciplinary and multi-methodological approaches (psychology, linguistics, literature, cultural studies, educational sciences).
     
  • Common conference for both projects - 2027, University of Coimbra

Events & Conferences

Results of the above-mentioned research projects are shared with the wider public across EC2U communities.
  • Travelling Exhibition: a collaborative exhibition on language and cultural diversity in EC2U regions, designed by researchers and PhD students and students of the JMP, in collaboration with schools, cities, and other local stakeholders. The exhibition will tour EC2U universities, highlighting autochthonous and migrant languages that are often invisible in public space, using images, maps, and expert insights. The goal is to raise awareness, spark dialogue, and celebrate Europe’s linguistic richness.
     
  • Hybrid Open Lectures: 9 public lectures across the EC2U Alliance, organised by researchers of the VIQE, addressing how to build sustainable intercultural relationships while avoiding cultural biases and stereotypes. Each EC2U Partner University will host at least one lecture locally.
