The GIS Day 2021 on “Geographic Information Science for Sustainable Cities and Communities“ was a hybrid event that took place at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, with presentations from the universities of Iaşi and Turku

As a contribution to the international GIS Day (www.gisday.com) on 17 November 2021, the GIScience group of Friedrich Schiller University of Jena organized a networking event for researchers, students, and stakeholders from authorities and industry where applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geodata in research, administration, and industry were presented.

With a focus on “Geographic Information Science for Sustainable Cities and Communities”, this year’s GIS Day contributed to the activities of the EC2U Virtual Institute for Sustainable Cities and Communities. Topics ranged from open environmental information in Bavaria to modelling landslide hazards in Austria under the effect of land use change, and assessing urban heat islands in Europe – a theme addressed in two EC2U partner contributions via video call:

  • Geographical approach of environmental issues in Iaşi city (Romania), using GIS tools.

The GIS Day activity was organized as a hybrid event with presentations given in the Great Conference Hall of the Rosensäle in Jena, Germany and via Zoom, and with audiences in the conference room as well as online. It was attended by 60 participants from several German universities, government agencies, businesses, and research institutes. It was the first joint action of the universities of Jena, Iaşi and Turku in the framework of the EC2U Virtual Institute for Sustainable Cities and Communities, with more joint events to come!
