The RI4C2 (Research & Innovation for Cities & Citizens) team held a mid-term meeting in Coimbra, Portugal from April 17th to April –19th, 2023. During the final session, roundtables were organised to discuss good practices on research, related both to the project and to the EC2U Alliance as a whole. The experts covered several topics, including the European Reform of Research Assessment, Research Infrastructures and Open Data, Citizen Science, Knowledge Transfer, the EC2U Innovation Centre, and research facilities at the University of Iasi.

The first roundtable concerned Researchers & Research evaluation.

Ludovic Thilly, EC2U & RI4C2 coordinator (University of Poitiers), provided some information on the European Reform of Research Assessment and on the CoARA (Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment) instrument. The European Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment, its implication and its future development were discussed. Then, Laura Niemi from the University of Turku presented how Finland is concretely implementing the Agreement. She shared insights on the implementation strategy chosen at the national and local levels. Additionally, the discussion covered the level of implementation of the Agreement in other EC2U partner universities.

The second roundtable focused on Research infrastructures and Open Data.

Daniela Ovadia from the University of Pavia discussed the importance of having a common taxonomy for research infrastructures and education courses within Europe. She argued that it was a necessity in regard to databases and datasets so that they can be interconnected and that it becomes easier to find and share data. Then, Mari Riipinen from the University of Turku continued the discussion in practical terms with the example of Finland’s and the University of Turku’s roadmap of research infrastructures. She presented their individual strategy regarding research infrastructures. A discussion followed concerning research infrastructures’ platforms.

A third roundtable concerned Knowledge Transfer, with presentations from Matthias Piontek (University of Jena), Jose Miguel Mateos (University of Salamanca) and Ionel Mangalagiu (University of Iasi).

Matthias Piontek presented the dialogue that was fostered in Jena between the academia and innovation actors. Jose Miguel Mateos then presented the key activities and objectives of the future EC2U Innovation Centre as well as funding opportunities for the Centre to function. Finally, Ionel Mangalagiu presented the specific research infrastructures and hot topics in research at the University of Iasi.

The final roundtable focused on Citizen Science with Iolanda Voda, from the University of Iasi and Dana Strauss from the University of Jena.

Iolanda Voda shared insights on the topic within the framework of the Local Knowledge Ecosystems, on which the University of Iasi is specifically working during the RI4C2 project. Then, Dana Strauss presented Science with and for Society in local and European networks highlighting the different levels of collaboration that take place in Jena. The following discussion explored the relationship between the academia, external stakeholders and citizens. Finally, Ludovic Thilly concluded the session by presenting new research opportunities within EC2U.
